I am a 4th generation Floridian, better known as a cracker (Florida rivaled Texas in the cattle industry. Instead of lassos Florida cattleman used bull whips that made cracking sounds). My father is a robotics engineer and mother was a self taught artist. My childhood home was filled with electronic projects along side my mothers crafty inventions. I come by my need to create and invent honestly. It was out of necessity to have what my peers had and also to outdo my 3 older brothers.
My first acts of art:
1. I wanted a knife like my brothers all had. I took an old hack saw blade and sharpened it on my Dads hand crank grinder, then I broke a yard stick into pieces to form the handle that I wrapped in string.
2. All the kids that I went to school with had Adidas sneakers. My Mom and Dad only shopped at Sears and they didn’t sell Adidas. My sneakers only had two stripes, so I took my Moms pinking shears and cut an extra stripe out of electrical tape.
3. My older brothers where big squirrel hunters. They would de-bone the squirrel tails and give them to me. I didn’t have an allowance and Mothers day was approaching. I took the squirrel tales and slotted pencils into them where the bone once was. I presented my mother with a box of furry pencils for Mothers day. (I found them 40 years later when I was going through her stuff after she died)
4. Not having any privacy in a house hold of wild brothers I created a bell system for my room. Taking apart an old phone I made a door bell that sounded (kind of) when my brothers entered my room.
So you see I’m still making things www.marthawhittington.com that I feel are out of necessity.
Thanks for reading about me and my family.
